In many ways, The Kindler Hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska embodies what IDM does best. Lincoln’s first and only independent boutique hotel anchors a larger effort by the city to reinvest in its downtown. IDM has been part of several other milestone hotel projects (Hotel Vandivort, Hotel Julien Dubuque, Jefferson Street Inn) in markets that previously had not been served by luxury lodging.
The Kindler Hotel comes to the city during the largest period of growth in its history. Located downtown just blocks away from the Historic Haymarket District and University of Nebraska-Lincoln, The Kindler Hotel effortlessly blends Lincoln’s local character with a modern West Coast aesthetic to create a refined Midwestern experience. The hotel is a vertical expansion of the building originally sited on the property and includes the historic restoration of the Commercial Building, an historic property built in 1925 that is home to Lincoln institution Misty’s Steakhouse.
But the hotel’s story is about more than sophisticated accommodations in a location that’s prime for both sports fans and culture enthusiasts. Nick and Brooke Castaneda took the opportunity to develop a hotel in Lincoln in part because Brooke, a Lincoln native, maintains close ties to the area where much of her family still resides. The husband-and-wife team, along with Brooke’s family, then decided to call the property The Kindler Hotel to honor Brooke’s father, Ken Kindler, who passed away in 2014.
Mr. Kindler, who was what his family calls a passionate “garage artist,” created because he loved to do it. The hotel’s design team incorporated elements that pay homage to his metal sculptures and the rich art history of Nebraska. On the food and beverage front, the development team tapped Food Network host, cookbook author, and Olympic gold medalist figure skater Brian Boitano to design the cocktail menu as well as wine and small bites pairings. The hotel’s interior was brought to life by designer Ross Vincent. Events and meetings will be held in the historic ballroom of the Commercial Club.
