My husband and I haven’t gone on an overnight without kids since our second child was born…OVER TWO YEARS AGO! So you can imagine our excitement when The Plaza Hotel in Milwaukee offered to host us for a night. We literally dropped everything, drove our kiddos to their grandparents’ house and hit up Milwaukee adult-style. It was exactly what we needed – some quality time as a couple, peace and quiet for a quick afternoon nap, late night dining and wandering around aimlessly. Seriously HEAVEN.
The Plaza Hotel was an amazing jumping off point for our time in Milwaukee. It’s close to EVERYTHING – walkable to the lakefront, riverfront, Starbucks (a must, of course), parks, museums and more. It is just a hop, skip and a jump from the famous Historic Third Ward where we browsed local boutique shops (did you know Milwaukee has a Restoration Hardware outlet?!) and had a cocktail on the river.
From the minute we stepped into the lobby of the Plaza we could feel the old world charm. With hidden nooks, shiny tiled floors (which the staff were literally polishing when we checked in), antique furnishings, dark wood and elegantly painted trim, the Plaza felt cozy and warm in a way most hotels just don’t. And that’s exactly the vibe they are going for – a sort of “apartment in the city” feel. We even got a REAL turn-key for our room rather than a key card, enhancing the feeling that we were stepping back in time.
Near the lobby is The Café at the Plaza, a vintage style café with a curved counter surrounding their “open kitchen” where you can watch the chefs prepare your food.
If you’d prefer to dine al fresco, they have a gorgeous brick paved courtyard with climbing vines and lush trees that make you feel as though you are in Europe rather than Wisconsin.
The hotel itself feels small and cozy, with just 2 floors of guest rooms. The guest rooms and lobby have all been completely renovated in a charming boutique style – a combination of European old-world flair and crisp modern amenities.
Our room itself was impeccably clean with a view of the courtyard below, and boasted a small kitchen complete with a full stove/oven and a dishwasher! Although we didn’t need to use the kitchen (except to keep our wine chilled in the full size fridge!) it was another feature of the hotel that made it feel as though you were truly in an apartment in the city.
Milwaukee is such a great getaway for us Madisonians because it is so close but feels like you are truly getting away from home. Having the chance to explore Milwaukee sans kids was a blast – we took full advantage of our central location at the Plaza to leisurely explore streets and neighborhoods we’d never been before with no timeline.
If you are looking for a place to stay in Milwaukee, I highly recommend The Plaza. It offers that homey feeling that is unheard of among chain hotels. It truly does feel like a little apartment in the city…it’s like being at home without the toys, crumbs and piles of laundry. HA!
